'Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man': Everything to Know (1)

4

Knives Out quickly became a beloved franchise following its first two films — and Benoit Blanc’s adventures are just getting started.

The first movie, which was released in 2019, explored the death of renowned writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) and how his wealthy, dysfunctional family may have played a role in his demise. Viewers watched as detective Blanc (Daniel Craig) worked together with Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) to solve the murder — as the nurse secretly tried to cover up her own involvement.

Knives Out also starred Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell.

Rian Johnson, who directed, wrote and produced the film, went on to expand the Knives Out universe with the first sequel. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery served as an anthology with only Craig returning as his character from the first film.

Glass Onion, which premiered on Netflix in December 2022, introduced a new group of people at the center of a murder investigation. After traveling to a remote island in Greece, Benoit tried to figure out who was responsible for two deaths connected to fictional tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton).

Has a 3rd 'Knives Out' Movie Been Announced?

Netflix bought the rights to two Knives Out sequels in a $469 million deal that took place in 2021. The streaming service released the first follow-up in December 2022 titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

In May 2024, Johnson dropped a teaser for the third installment of his Knives Out franchise called Wake Up Dead Man.

The clip revealed that Craig will return as private detective Blanc, reprising his role from the franchise’s first two films. “In the beginning, the knives came out,” he said via voiceover. “Then behold, the glass was shattered. But my most dangerous case yet is about to be revealed.”

After a coffin is shown and a bell tolls, the teaser reveals Wake Up Dead Man will be released in 2025.

Will Daniel Craig Reprise the Role of Benoit Blanc?

During a September 2022 interview with Variety, Craig confirmed his plans to reprise the role of the detective in future Knives Out films. “If he keeps writing them, I’ll keep doing them. That’s what makes it easy then, he’s such a wonderful writer that it’s there on the page for me to do," the actor shared.

What Fans Expect for the Future of the Franchise?

In December 2022, Johnson hinted that he was "just starting to figure out" the layout of the third film.

"We have one more movie in our contract with Netflix, but I don't see it as a trilogy," the director told RadioTimes. "I see it as an ongoing thing. As long as Daniel and I are having fun and coming up with something new and exciting every time, we'll keep doing this as long as we can."

What Is the Vision for 'Knives Out 3'?

“Beyond setting, beyond bikinis versus sweaters, it truly is going to be trying something different narratively and tonally. I’m already excited about doing the next one," Johnson teased to Netflix's Tudum after the release of the second movie.

In October 2023, Johnson elaborated on his plans for the third installment. “It’s coming along,” he told The Wrap. “I obviously couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing.”

Johnson elaborated again in May 2024, writing via X, “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies.”

He continued: “We’re about to go into production on the 3rd one, and I’m very, very excited to share the title, which gives a little hint of where it’s going.”
